Each year 44,965 Americans die by suicide. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US. Given recent events, we wanted to highlight some ways you can be a part of suicide prevention through giving and volunteering. On June 15, 2020, the US Supreme Court ruled that it is illegal for employers to discriminate against employees based on their sexual orientation and gender. This recent victory highlights how we are still in the throes of fighting for who we are and who we love. The LGBTQIA+ Community Support and Legal Action Fund strives to support people affected by discrimination and advocates defending human rights. With the added strains of the pandemic and civil unrest throughout our country, it is crucial that we support these resources and advocacy groups to pave the way towards a brighter and more just future.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day, an international day for global mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigma. This year's theme is "Mental Health in an Unequal World." LGBTQ+ people around the world face discrimination which can lead to a lack of access to affirmative care. In the US, LGBTQ+ adults are twice as likely as the general public to experience mental health issues. In this fund, we're highlighting The Trevor Project, the largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning) young people.

National Coming Out Day was inspired by a single march. 500,000 people participated in the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights on October 11, 1987, generating momentum to last for 4 months after the march had ended. During this period, over a hundred LGBTQIA+ identifying individuals gathered outside Washington, DC, and decided on creating a national day to celebrate coming out – this began on the 1st anniversary of their historic march. Two years ago we rebranded National Coming Out Day at MongoDB to (Inter)national Coming Out Day to include our employees all over the world.

The first Pride parades and festivals in the US which were organized in 1970 to commemorate the Stonewall Riots in June of 1969 when the LGBTQ+ community rose up in protest of a violent police raid of the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. In June we celebrate Pride Month, recognizing the contributions and spirit of the LGBTQIA+ community. It's a time for joy, visibility, and solidarity within the LGBTQIA+ community worldwide. Keep an eye out for programming throughout the month!

Transgender Awareness Week is celebrated from November 13th through November 19th each year, and aims to increase public knowledge surrounding the common issues faced by the transgender community including discrimination and prejudice in various forms, socioeconomic and healthcare inequities, and acts of violence, among others. Additionally, Transgender Awareness Week highlights the importance of trans visibility in all spaces, showcases stories and experiences from within the transgender community, and encourages allies to stand in solidarity by showing their support and commitment to working towards justice and equality. Transgender Awareness Week precedes Transgender Day of Remembrance, observed annually on November 20th. Transgender Day of Remembrance memorializes the lives lost to targeted, anti-transgender violence and advocates for the fight for justice. In addition to supporting nonprofit organizations with a donation, you can participate by organizing or attending a vigil to honor those who have lost their lives to targeted acts of violence. Your donation to this Fund will help support the selected organizations' shared mission of providing support in all forms to the transgender community, increasing trans visibility, and advocating for justice and inclusion through direct client services, policy development, and educational programming.

This fund was set up to support nonprofits + charities, which were selected by Pantheon staff + community members, in improving the lives + expanding the rights of those in the LGBTQIA+ community. Each nonprofit listed here is involved in work that benefits the LGBTQIA+ community in some capacity, + 100% of the funds raised will be split evenly between the 50 organizations. Anyone can contribute to this fund, so please share it far + wide! If you do donate, remember to also ask your employer if they’ll match your donation. Note: Pantheon matches donations for full-time employees up to $500 USD per year per employee, up to $25K USD per year.
