Hurricane Irma has caused catastrophic damage throughout the Caribbean and Florida, leaving the islands uninhabitable and Florida under water and without electricity. In response, Bright Funds has established the Hurricane Irma Disaster Response and Recovery Fund. This Fund is comprised of pre-vetted nonprofits providing disaster response in the region. Through a single donation to the Fund, you can support multiple organizations’ initiatives to provide short-term and long-term response and recovery. We have selected organizations providing assistance with immediate relief needs, including rescue efforts and medical assistance in the Caribbean and Florida. The composition of nonprofits in this Fund is subject to change as we learn more about the needs on the ground.

Care

With the entire island of Cuba impacted, CARE and local partners in the affected regions of the Caribbean Islands are preparing to respond if requested and will look to assist with water, sanitation, hygiene and household supplies and other relief items as needed. Over the coming days, CARE partners will be looking to travel to the impacted regions to assess damages.

Volunteer Florida Foundation Inc.

Volunteer Florida activated its call center to manage offers of volunteers and donations and has also activated and will manage the Florida Disaster Fund, the State of Florida’s official private fund established to assist Florida’s communities as they respond to and recover during times of emergency or disaster. The Fund is administered by the Volunteer Florida Foundation. Funds will support disaster relief organizations active in responding to and recovering from Hurricane Irma.

American National Red Cross

The American Red Cross has set up a massive relief effort across states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to help people affected by Hurricane Irma. About 2,900 Red Cross workers have responded to Irma, with 450 more on the way. Staff and volunteers are working closely with locals and the IFRC to assess damage and reduce the risk of epidemic outbreaks among the Caribbean Islands. The Red Cross continues to deliver relief supplies, help with disaster mental health and health services while also conducting search and rescue.
